WELCOME TO DICTIONATIVITY!

Home: Bem-vindo

ABOUT

From the wish to bring cultures together and grace the world with meaningful stories (as well as a slight but determining nudge from Professor Nick Wilson, KCL), Dictionativity came to life. As in a dictionary, we hold a collection of words and, with creativity, we attempt to give them a universal understanding.

But it would be fool of us to collect words that already have a universal understanding through the beauty of translation, right? So we turned to those which don’t, those which still hold boundaries between cultures, those which remain untranslatable. And with your help, and the help of people from around the globe, we seek to translate them in forms which we all understand: music, paintings, film, fiction, dance, etc…

In the end (if there is really an end!), we will have gathered a rich collection of the most unique things humanity has to offer!

EXPLORE AND ADD VALUE TO OUR WORLD MAP

We invite you to join us on this circumnavigation and add an untranslatable word of your culture (it can be your country of residence, the place you grew up, the place you call home…), and try to translate it into something that might help build an understanding of that word. It can be expressed through a painting, a song, fiction, a dance, etc… it can be an original or an existing story, whatever you think fits best!

How to do it:

  • Click on the "+" sign, located on the top right on the map below;

  • Choose a place - the country where that word comes from;

  • Add your word and a brief explanation of what is means, or how it is used;

  • Upload a document, or paste a link with a creative translation of that word;

  • Enjoy your magnificent contribution this collection and navigate the map to learn something new :)
